COMPLETED PROJECTS
Cross-Cultural Youth Program (YES YOU CAN!) –
The RC&D assisted YES YOU CAN! with project planning,
marketing, and funding development for its pilot program
at Alta Vista Elementary School in Sarasota County.
YES YOU CAN! Cross Cultural Youth Center is an
after-school program for children in Sarasota County,
Florida. YES YOU CAN! provides a safe and enriching
environment for some of Sarasota’s most at-risk
children. Founder Nina Burwell brings a variety of
experience to the program — from obtaining a master's
degree in education to working a police beat in New York
City. Nina’s dedication to building a better world
provides YES YOU CAN! with the vision it needs to do it
right.

Manatee Agricultural Reuse Project (MARS) – The RC&D
coordinated the master planning effort for connecting
agricultural users to Manatee County's Main MARS main
transmission line. The master planning process included
several stakeholder workshops designed to encourage a
dialogue on some of the needs and concerns to consider
when putting together the program. The MARS Master Plan
was the first step towards the development of the MARS
Farm Connection Grant Program.
Emerson Point Midden Mound Project – The Florida West
Coast RC&D assisted in a cooperative effort between the
USDA Natural Resource Conservation Service, the Manatee
River Soil & Water Conservation District, and the
Manatee County Conservation Lands Management Department
to protect and preserve archeologically significant
Native American shell mounds threatened by erosion along
the Manatee River at Emerson Point Park.
A revetment was constructed to protect the shoreline
from further erosion, and to prevent further degradation
to the shell mounds. The project was constructed by
volunteers throughout Manatee County, and labor was
provided by inmates of the Manatee Department of
Corrections. Bill Burger, a local archeologist and
expert on Emerson Point, volunteered his time and was on
site at all times during the construction to insure the
integrity of the mounds. Funding was provided through a
grant from the State of Florida Division of Historical
Resources. The project was completed in 2002.
